Referral to palliative care services – ICST

Referral to palliative care services

Tutorial presented by Professor Ben Hope-Gill, Respiratory Consultant.

Palliative care teams can offer holistic symptom management, so patients with worsening or difficult to control symptoms should be referred to palliative care for review.

Patients who are struggling to cope with activities of daily living might also benefit from a palliative care assessment. These services can often facilitate the patient’s access to social care services, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

If a patient needs to use oxygen (long term or ambulatory), they should be considered for a referral to palliative care.
