Sustainable inhaler prescribing in primary care

Tutorial presented by Dr Sarah Williams, Salaried GP, Bevan Fellow in Sustainable Healthcare, Chair of Greener Practice Wales

In this tutorial, Sarah discusses:

  1. How to prioritise sustainability in primary care
  2. How to discuss with your patients about making the switch
  3. Addressing other concerns about sustainable inhaler prescribing

The carbon footprint of inhaler prescribing in Wales, is the equivalent to 179 million passenger air miles, or flying a plane to the sun and back. By making the switch to dry powder inhalers, it would be possible to reduce the carbon footprint considerably.

In order to make sustainable healthcare a priority in your place of work, reach out to other members of the team who are also interested in making the switch, including your wider community network, and discuss some strategies for engaging with the rest of the team. Linked below is a presentation which can be downloaded for presentation to your colleagues.

It’s important to use language that patients are more likely to respond to. Different populations generally respond to different health campaigns:

  • Older adults respond less well to fear messages such as “our planet is suffering”, and better to more altruistic health messages such as “protecting the planet for future generations and your grandchildren”
  • On the other hand, Younger adults respond better to fear messages, such as “Due to the climate crisis, you need to switch inhalers which is in the benefit to your health and the health of future generations”

Sarah is the Chair of Greener Practice Wales, a new and evolving group with GP and GP trainee members from all over Wales. Please contact greenerpracticewales@gmail.com if you wish to join the group.
