Cuff deflation and speaking valves – ICST

Cuff deflation and speaking valves

When the reason for the tracheostomy is resolved, the first stage of the weaning process is cuff deflation. The decision to start this process is multi-disciplinary, including a speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and nursing staff.

Cuff deflation and the placement of a one-way speaking valve restores normal airflow, and the potential for a patient to use their voice. There are also lots of other clinical benefits, such as improved cough, improved ability to manage secretions, to help in breathing muscle strength and to improve swallow function.
