Case-based Exam

To assess competence in interpretation of earlobe capillary blood gases, candidates are required to complete a summative multiple choice exam. You will have 25 minutes to answer 15 questions . The pass mark is 80%. If you do not meet the assessment criteria, don’t panic! You can resit as many times as you need.

You will be assessed on your ability to interpret earlobe capillary blood gases using ELCBG traces. Before you start, make a note of the normal ranges for each blood gas variable (if you don’t know them already), listed below.

SpO2 >95%
PaO2 >10kPa
PaCO2 4.5 – 6kPa
pH 7.35 – 7.45
HCO3 24 – 30mmol/L
BE ±3
SaO2 >95%
