The Paediatric Emergency Box – ICST

The Paediatric Emergency Box

Tutorial presented by Julie Bickel, Paediatric ENT Nurse Specialist

In this video, Julie outlines the essential components of the Paediatric Emergency Box. This box contains all the essential components that keep a child safe, and should remain by their side at all times. The contents include:

  • a tracheostomy tube of the same size and length as the current one
  • a tube that is one size smaller
  • spare ties
  • a suction catheter
  • round-edged scissors
  • lubricating jelly
  • a wedge (needed for certain tubes)

It’s crucial to keep these items in-date and with the child at all times. It is the responsibility of staff caring for the child with the tracheostomy to check the contents of the box on handover.
