Overview of tracheostomy tubes for babies and children

Video presented by Christine English, Advanced Clinical Practitioner

This video will demonstrate the difference between the different tracheostomy tubes available for babies and children.

There are various types of tracheostomy tubes commonly used for children, primarily from the Bivona and Shiley ranges. These tubes come in different sizes (paediatric and neonatal), with or without cuffs, and can be extra long. They also have different flange shapes and sizes to fit a child’s neck. The child’s surgeon selects the most suitable tube to ensure a safe and secure airway, prioritising comfort and ease of securing the tube on the neck. Detailed information about the child’s tube should be available at the bedside.
