Making a referral to a sleep service – ICST

Making a referral to a sleep service

Patients should be referred to a local sleep service if their history is compatible with a diagnosis of OSA, and they are experiencing excessive daytime sleepiness which is having an impact at home or at work.

Part of an effective referral would include:

  • Description of the patient’s symptoms
  • How the symptoms are having an impact to the patient’s quality of life
  • The patient’s driving status
  • Examination of the upper airway
  • Screening blood tests
