Clinical Pattern recognition – ICST

Clinical Pattern recognition

Two major patterns are identified on abnormal liver blood tests:

  • Cholestatic
  • Hepatitic

It is important to differentiate between the two types of disease because the underlying causes and further investigations are different.

A cholestatic pattern is identified when the ALP is more abnormal than the ALT is abnormal.

A hepatitic pattern is identified when the ALT is more abnormal than the ALP is abnormal.
