Assessing suitability for weaning

Step 2 of the All-Wales Pathway for weaning COVID-19 patients with tracheostomies (linked below) explores suitability for weaning. Caution to initiate ward-based weaning if the patient meets the following criteria:

  • Neuromuscular disease
  • Those with a life-limiting co-morbidity
  • Pre-existing or significant concerns over sleep disordered breathing
  • Need for specialist input (e.g. neurosurgery)
