An overview of the primary headache disorders

The Primary Headache Disorders comprise Migraine, Tension-type headaches and Cluster Headaches.

Migraine

  • The second most common form of headache
  • Often described as recurrent throbbing or pulsating, moderate to severe, and often unilateral pain
  • Episodic migraine, occurring on fewer than 15 days per month
  • Chronic migraine headache, occurring on more than 15 days per month
  • Lasting 4–72 hours

Tension-type headaches

  • The most common primary headache disorder
  • Episodic tension-type headache, occurring on fewer than 15 days per month
  • Chronic tension-type headache, occurring on more than 15 days per month
  • It may be stress-related or associated with musculoskeletal problems in the neck
  • This headache is described as pressure or tightness, lasting 30-minutes to continuously

Cluster headaches

  • Cluster headaches are more common in young men who smoke
  • The pain is described as excruciating, often ‘suicidal headaches’
  • Chronic tension-type headache, occurring on more than 15 days per month
  • On side of the headache, patients experience red and/or watery eye, nasal congestion, swollen eyelid, forehead and facial sweating, constricted pupil and/or drooping eyelid
  • Associated with restlessness and agitation
  • The attacks last between 15-180 minutes
