A tracheostomy is a temporary or permanent insertion of an artificial airway into the trachea, which may be inserted surgically or percutaneously. There are a range of tracheostomy tubes available, with different component parts to suit the needs of the patient.
Patients may require a tracheostomy for a variety of reasons, including:
- Prolonged periods of mechanical ventilation
- Part of a surgical procedure
- For burns or trauma
