In this tutorial, Steve provides an overview of who can be managed in primary care with headache disorders, covering the following three topics:

  • What is Medication Overuse Headache?
  • How to detect Medication Overuse Headache
  • Managing Medication Overuse Headache

As many as 4% of the population maybe overusing analgesics.

Medication Overuse Headache appears in a patient who has an existing primary headache disorder, and has been taking headache relief medication too regularly. Medication overuse headache is a paradox; the medications are taken to relieve headache are instead causing headache. There is a higher prevalence in women, and those using opioids or triptans

Medication Overuse Headache often masks the underlying headache disorder, making them much more difficult to manage.

Medication Overuse Headache is more common in migraine, and less common in people who don’t have an underlying headache disorder (e.g. musculoskeletal pain).
